The Sweet Escape
Junyi Lu, Francesca Dolor, and Sam Creasey

ESSAY - SOUR MILK ALL ON THE FLOOR
Night Café presents 'The Sweet Escape', featuring works by Junyi Lu, Francesca Dolor, and Sam Creasey. Across painting, drawing, and sculpture, the exhibition responds to a world in which global crises have exposed the fragility of institutions once thought to guarantee societal stability, and to the growing disillusionment with systems, structures, and narratives that were long assumed reliable.
Junyi Lu’s paintings and sculptures navigate the threshold between reality and expression. Figures and objects are isolated from narrative, neither fixed in motion nor environment. By evoking memory, vulnerability, and the subconscious, her work reflects the precariousness of the frameworks through which we understand the world. Through subtle transitions of tone, texture, and form, she produces charged spaces where meaning remains elusive yet emotionally potent.
Francesca Dolor’s work bridges drawing and painting to produce panoramic explorations of psychological extremities and the transient states between them. Often structured with repetitive geometries and architectures, the works explore internal landscapes and affective scenes that are littered with objects of biography, submission, and resistance. The resulting fields of colour and mark making produce dense compositions that collapse between comprehension and abstraction. Central to their practice are themes of subversion, solidarity, and the complexities of lived experience.
Sam Creasey paintings examine the urban environment as a site of rapid change, gentrification, and hyper-capitalism. Through uncanny, jagged depictions of city life, he reveals the erosion of collective trust and the instability of social and spatial environments. Drawing from journeys across London, he depicts human presence, architecture, and sociological forces in compositions that transform the familiar into spaces of alienation, where temporal narratives and urban relics emerge amidst the homogenised cityscape.
The Sweet Escape is on view at Night Café at 162 New Cavendish street from September 26 until November 7 with a private view on September 25 from
